Nicki

Nicki Johal, Nurse Practitioner

Jagdeep (Nicki) Kaur Johal is a seasoned Nurse Practitioner (NP) with extensive clinical and academic expertise in critical care, orthopaedic surgery, and perioperative cardiology. With over a decade of experience across orthopaedics, cardiology, and critical care, Nicki is highly skilled in managing complex trauma and surgical recovery cases. She holds advanced degrees in nursing, including a Post-Master’s Nurse Practitioner certification from the University of Calgary and an MScN from Queen’s University, both of which form the foundation of her evidence-based approach to acute patient care.

In addition to her clinical roles, Nicki has demonstrated leadership in academia as an Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster University and an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Toronto. She is dedicated to mentoring future healthcare professionals, developing NP orientation programs, and advancing nursing education. A frequent presenter at national and international conferences, she has co-authored research on cognitive behavioural therapy in fracture recovery and the use of EPIC EMR systems to enhance healthcare workflows. Nicki is also an active member of several professional organizations and has contributed globally through initiatives like a volunteer medical mission to Haiti. Her career reflects a deep commitment to improving patient outcomes through clinical excellence, education, and research.

Heather Campbell, Nurse Practitioner

Heather is a compassionate and highly skilled Nurse Practitioner specializing in orthopedic care. With a deep commitment to patient-centered practice and evidence-based care, Heather brings a wealth of experience and expertise to our team.

After completing their undergraduate studies in nursing, and spending the majority of her nursing career in Emergency medicine, Heather pursued advanced education obtaining a Master’s of Nursing: Nurse Practitioner.

Heather believes in building trusting relationships with patients, listening attentively to their concerns, and empowering them to participate in their healthcare journey. Her dedication to evidence-based practice ensures that patients receive the highest standard of care based on the latest research and clinical guidelines.

With Heather’s expertise and compassionate approach, patients can trust that they are in capable hands as they navigate their orthopedic health challenges.

Sarah Hennings

Sarah Hennings, Nurse Practitioner

Sarah graduated with her Master’s of Nursing from Athabasca University and became a nurse practitioner in 2020. Her experience lies in primary care, addiction and mental health, rural outpost nursing, and chronic disease management. After seeing countless patients with orthopaedic concerns in the community and emergency, Sarah pursued further education on pain management, skeletal health and aging, and joint injection therapy. She brings a wealth of knowledge and training to the team and is capable of navigating through some of your most complicated orthopaedic concerns.

Jasmine Paul, Nurse Practitioner

Jasmine Paul is a Nurse Practitioner with specialized training in Adult-Gerontology care. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Victoria in 2013 and began her career as a registered nurse on the acute spinal cord injury unit at Vancouver General Hospital. Driven by a passion for advanced clinical practice while obtaining her high acuity spine training, she pursued her Masters of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner degree in 2020. She then served as a primary care provider in East Vancouver, offering comprehensive, community-based care.

Now based in Calgary, she works in Orthopaedics with a clinical focus on spinal cord conditions. Her practice blends evidence-based medicine with a patient-centered approach to improve the quality of life for individuals living with complex musculoskeletal conditions.

Kayla Hawkins McColl, Nurse Practitioner

Kayla Hawkins McColl is a Nurse Practitioner who brings nearly a decade of oncology nursing experience and a strong foundation in rural, emergency, and day medicine care. She completed her Master of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner degree in 2025 and is passionate about delivering patient-centred, evidence-based care.

Since 2016, Kayla has worked across pediatric, adult, and gynecologic oncology settings, developing a deep appreciation for the physical and emotional complexities of chronic and acute illness. Her diverse clinical background gives her a comprehensive understanding of the patient journey, from diagnosis through recovery.

At the core of Kayla’s practice is a commitment to holistic, compassionate care. She is dedicated to ensuring each patient feels heard, respected, and actively involved in their health decisions. Whether supporting recovery from injury or managing chronic orthopaedic conditions, Kayla focuses on addressing the full spectrum of her patients’ needs—physical, emotional, and functional.

Karen M. Andres, Nurse Practitioner

Karen has been in health care for over 30 years.  She worked as a Registered Nurse for 18 years, predominately in Intensive Care.  For the last 12 years she has worked as a Nurse Practitioner in a variety of settings including intensive care, trauma, gastroenterology, and primary care.  Karen utilizes her knowledge and experience from her many years in health care along with her diverse educational background when working with each of her patients. Her focus, whenever possible, is to improve the health and well-being of her patients.

Orthopaedic Surgeons

Dr. Cory Cundal, MD, FRCS, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Cundal received his medical degree from the University of Alberta in 1993. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Alberta, and then obtained fellowship training in adult and pediatric spine surgery at the Rocky Mountain Spine Clinic in Denver, Colorado.

After returning to Canada, Dr. Cundal started an orthopaedic surgery practice and became the chief of surgery at the QEII Hospital in Grande Prairie, Alberta. He relocated to Calgary in 2003 and joined the University of Calgary Orthopedic Surgery Division as a Clinical Lecturer. Currently, Dr. Cundal practices at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, and is the Site Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dr. Cundal specializes in the treatment of degenerative conditions of the lumbar spine and has over 20 years of experience in adult lumbar spine, and hip & knee arthroplasty surgery. When he is not working, Dr. Cundal enjoys mountain biking, tennis, golf, and ice hockey.

Herman

Dr. Herman Johal, MD, MPH, FRCS, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Herman Johal is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Calgary and an Orthopaedic Trauma Staff Surgeon at Foothills Medical Centre. Previously, he served as an Assistant Professor at McMaster University, where he played key roles in residency training and trauma care.

Dr. Johal holds an MD from Queen’s University, an MPH in Injury Control from Johns Hopkins University, and an FRCSC in Orthopaedic Surgery. His specialized training includes fellowships in Orthopaedic Trauma at McMaster University and the University of Maryland’s Shock Trauma Center.

Renowned for his expertise in musculoskeletal trauma, Dr. Johal’s clinical focus includes acute orthopaedic injuries, complications such as malunion and nonunion, and deformity correction. He is dedicated to advancing trauma systems and promoting value-based decision-making in orthopaedic care through research and education.

A recipient of numerous teaching awards, Dr. Johal has contributed extensively to clinical research and education, with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and numerous national and international presentations. His commitment to patient-centered care and innovation solidifies his reputation as a leader in orthopaedic trauma.

Dr. Paul Duffy, MD, FRCS, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Paul James Duffy is a highly respected orthopaedic surgeon and academic based in Calgary, Alberta, with over 20 years of experience. He serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine and is Chief of the Section of Orthopaedic Trauma. His expertise in orthopaedic trauma and joint reconstruction is widely recognized, supported by his medical training at Memorial University of Newfoundland and additional studies in Comparative Development Studies and Economics from Trent University.

Dr. Duffy’s extensive background includes fellowships in pelvic and acetabular trauma at St. George’s NHS Trust in London and orthopaedic trauma and clinical research at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. As a former Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship Director, he has mentored numerous residents and fellows who have gone on to make significant contributions in orthopaedics. His research focuses on trauma-related injuries, with notable studies in fibular fixation and hip fracture management, and he has received multiple awards, including the Bovill Award for best paper at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association Annual Meeting.

Beyond his academic and clinical roles, Dr. Duffy is deeply committed to global medical outreach. As a team leader with Team Broken Earth, he has conducted humanitarian missions in Haiti and Guatemala, bringing essential orthopaedic care to underserved areas. A sought-after speaker and mentor, he continues to shape the field through his dedication to education, research, and impactful humanitarian service.

Denis Joly MD, FRCSC, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Joly is originally from Northern Alberta. He completed medical school in the francophone stream at the University of Ottawa and his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Calgary. He then completed a lower limb reconstruction fellowship with focus on hip and knee arthroplasty at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto followed by an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the University of Ottawa.
 
Dr. Joly started his clinic practice as a locum at South Health Campus in 2020 before starting at the Rockyview General Hospital in 2021. His clinical focus is on primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty as well as orthopaedic trauma. He is a clinical lecturer for the University of Calgary medical school.

Alex Meldrum, MD , M.Ed. FRCSC Orthopaedic Surgery

Dr. Meldrum received his medical degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 2014 and completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Calgary in 2019. Following his residency, he pursued subspecialty training in hip and knee reconstruction and orthopaedic trauma. Dr Meldrum completed a complex hip and knee arthroplasty (replacement) fellowship at Dalhousie University in Halifax. His fellowship was focused on primary and revision arthroplasty (replacement) of the hip and knee including computer-assisted-surgery (navigation/robotics) and kinematic alignment in total knee arthroplasty.

Dr Meldrum also completed an orthopaedic trauma fellowship at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. During his arthroplasty and trauma fellowships, Dr Meldrum also completed a Master of Education (Health Professions Education) through the University of Ottawa. He is also a current Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor.

Dr. Meldrum is a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Calgary. He is an attending orthopaedic surgeon at the Rockyview General Hospital where his practice focuses primarily on hip and knee arthroplasty, knee arthroscopy and trauma.

Dr. Meldrum is active in the research and education and has published in a number of peer reviewed journals, including writing a textbook chapter on computer-assisted-surgery and robotic-assisted knee arthroplasty.

Andrew Dodd, MD, FRCS, Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr. Dodd is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in Orthopaedic trauma and foot and ankle reconstruction. After completing Orthopaedic residency at the University of Calgary, he pursued further training in Orthopaedic trauma at the University of British Columbia. Following that he obtained fellowship training in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto.

His current clinical practice is based out of the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Alberta.

Expedium Surgical

Our board certified surgeons have sub-specialty training in hip and knee replacement, and adult spine surgery. Surgical and non-surgical services are provided in Canada (Alberta and British Columbia).
